Torres de Quart

Torres Quart
The Torres de Quart, built on the basis of Naples´ Porte castel Nuevo in Italy, were originally part of Valencia´s city walls. The towers are made up of two cylindrical turrets joined together in the middle with an arch that forms a gateway to the city. They take their initial title, ´Tours de la Cal´ (limestone towers), from the old Valencian custom that all the limestone used in building the city was to pass through these very gates.
The Torres de Quart have served a number of different functions over time, including that of a prison, first for women, then for military detainees and you can still see the marks left by Napolean and his army when he attacked the city during the war of 1808.
