La Lonja

La Lonja
Standing opposite the Mercado Central, La Lonja de los Mercaderes (literally the Merchant´s Guild), also known as La Lonja de la Seda (the Silk Guild) has been dubbed the most beautiful work of gothic architecture in the whole of Europe - ´La joya del gótico civil europeo´ with an entrance hall of columns approaching 16m tall and an orange grove.
As a monument it symbolises the supremacy, wealth and strength of the city during the gothic period. It was built as a trade house between 1482 and 1492 and has since been home to the Institute for Maritime Law and the Taula de Cambis. It was declared a World Heritage site in 1996. It is open to the public daily and houses a variety of temporary exhibitions.
