La Catedral

Catedral (Cathedral)
Work on Valencia Cathedral started atop the foundations of an old mosque in the 13th century but was not completed until the 15th. After a total renovation in the 18th century the ecclectic building now exhibits the styles of all 3 of the mains ages it was built through; styles that are particularly apparent in the 3 grand cathedral doors - the Roman, the biggest, leading onto Calle Palau, the Gothic opening onto Plaza de la Virgen and the Barroque which forms the main entrance to the cathedral next to the Miguelete Tower.
Points of interest within the cathedral:
- The dome rising above Saint Autel, made up of 2 tiers of stained glass windows providing the cathedral´s main source of light.
- The 8 transept chapels, 6 of which are renovated to the classic barroque style and 2 of which have retained their original gothic style.
- Saint Resurrection´s Chapel, behind Saint Autel, containing the patron Saint of Valencia, Saint Vincent Martyr´s complete left forearm.
Opening times:
The cathedral is open Monday to Sunday from 7:30am-1pm and from 4:30-7:30pm. General entrance to the cathedral is free.
There is a 3 euro charge for an audio guided visit to the features mentionned above. This visit also includes the Cathedral Museum.
